I can't let October go by with out reminding everyone about how important it is to get your mammograms and do your monthly self breast exams. Both times I was diagnosed with cancer I found my lump. The first time I felt a lump in my breast which turned out not to be cancer, but while getting this lump removed my surgeon found the cancer that was hidden and undetectable by mammogram. My second diagnosis, I found a lymph node under my collar bone just by feeling it with my fingertips. I can't stress enough how important it is to listen to your body and be proactive.
There are a lot of things going on in October, races, bike rides, and lots and lots of products out there with pink ribbons slapped on them. There are some questions you should ask before buying pink.
1. How much money from your purchase actually goes toward breast cancer? Is the amount clearly stated on the package?
2. What is the maximum amount that will be donated?
3. How are the funds being raised?
4. To what breast cancer organization does the money go, and what types of programs does it support?
5. What is the company doing to assure that its products are not actually contributing to the breast cancer epidemic?
For more information on these questions you can go HERE Think Before You Pink is a great site to check out if you are planning to buy pink or donate to a cause.
Remember your mammograms and self exams, it can save your life.
Good points, Sarah.
We do need to read the small print on any charity things.
It is a very important month this!
Thanks for posting it and the link.

Hi Sarah -
Your photos are beautiful! I was directed to your blog by one of the gals from Mothers With Cancer. I think you pose good questions in the realm of charity money for breast cancer research. I work with Navigating Cancer, a free website to support the cancer community. I wonder if you would share some words on our site. Please contact me when you get a free moment. Thanks for the visual treat!
